INTRACOMP: What role does collaborative cultural expression play in increasingly inter- and transcultural societies?
The European Commission has announced that it will award nearly 3 million Euros to a consortium of 13 universities and arts organizations across Europe and the South Pacific, to advance cultural democracy. The project is entitled “Intercultural and Transcultural Competence Through Collaborative Cultural Expression” (INTRACOMP), and will develop global, regional and national educational frameworks and policy directives for arts and culture.
The UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policies for the Arts and Transformation led by Julius Heinicke, professor in cultural policy accompanies the consortium. In focus of its contribution is one work package that offers policy recommendations to enhance inclusion and ITC in arts education, with a focus on children and young people in Europe and beyond.
The project begins on February 1st 2025 and spans 36 months.
How can trans- and intercultural competence meet the challenges of a society that is becoming more diverse and at the same time increasingly polarised? Is the main research question of the project.
INTRACOMP critically explores cultural hierarchies and develops methods, digital resources, and frameworks to advance Intercultural and Transcultural Competence (ITC) in lifelong learning. Aligned with New European Bauhaus, ITC fosters innovative, meaningful cultural expressions, enabling arts learners to transform social behaviours. INTRACOMP empowers this through research and innovation, creating a competence framework for ITC in performing arts education across all levels and contexts. The transdisciplinary INTRACOMP consortium explores ITC across diverse societal contexts in Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe through partners situated in cultural organizations and tertiary institutions in Norway, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Italy, the UK, Serbia, Slovakia, Greece and Hungary. Contributions from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea extend these initiatives to the Global South, challenging Eurocentric views on ITC and arts in education.
INTRACOMP is coordinated by Nord University, Norway, the INTRACOMP project is led by Nicholas Rowe, UNESCO Chair in Dance and Social Inclusion and a professor in Dance Studies at Nord University in Norway and the University of Auckland in Aotearoa New Zealand.
