Moving Europe – Young people explore (hi)stories of migration
The project “Moving Europe – Negotiating legacies of migration at the museum” brings together young people, museum staff, academics, and representatives of migrant NGOs from across Europe. The aim is to promote a more nuanced understanding of the different experiences and backgrounds of migration and its effects, and to raise awareness of the complexity of migration.
Six European migration museums and educational partners (the Young Islam Conference in Berlin, the Museum of Italian Emigration in Genoa, the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, the Migration Museum of Denmark in Farum, and the Multicultural Center in Stockholm) are cooperating with history teachers and inviting students to participate in the project’s local and international activities. With the support of museum staff, the young people develop their own research projects on the history and experiences of migration and exhibit them in the museums. In international youth exchanges, young people visit the participating European migration museums and develop a podcast series and a digital resource collection based on their experiences.
The close cooperation between the partners involved leads to increased networking between actors from migrant NGOs, museums, and educational institutions in Europe.
The project is coordinated by EuroClio (European Association of History Educators) and the Migration Lab at the University of Hildesheim. In addition to its coordinating role, the Migration Lab team is conducting an accompanying evaluation of the project, researching diversity-sensitive education in (migration) museums, and offering workshops in the participating museums for the professional development of actors from museums, schools, and migrant NGOs.
